ChemInform Abstract

The title compounds have been prepared from ScI3, Sc strips, and graphite at 850 °C in sealed Nb containers. Both compounds crystallize in space group P1, with Z=2 for Sc6I11C2 (I) and Z=4 for Sc4I6C2 (II). (I) contains discrete M6X12-type clusters, which are connected to pairs via four coordinated I atoms. The phase (II) consists of infinite chains of condensed clusters each containinga C2 unit, namely pairs of centric clusters of ∼ D2h symmetry that are connected via shared metal edges by a distorted-trigonal-prismatic cluster. The bonding in (I) is discussed on the basis of the results of extended Hückel calculations.
