Abstract

Cyclization of the thiocyanates (II) and (VI) with the isocyanoacetate (I) gives the thiazoles (III) and (VIIa); the unstable thiol (IV) which is also produced is oxidized, forming the disulfide (V).

ChemInform Abstract

Cyclization of the thiocyanates (II) and (VI) with the isocyanoacetate (I) gives the thiazoles (III) and (VIIa); the unstable thiol (IV) which is also produced is oxidized, forming the disulfide (V). The acid (VIIb) is obtained from (VI) and (I) in the presence of potassium tert- butoxide. Reaction of the lithium salt of the isocyanide (VIII) with benzyl isocyanate (IX) leads to the formation of the oxazole (X).
