Ethylene glycol (II) is treated with the secondary amines (I) in the presence of ruthenium or iridium complexes to form the amino alcohols (IV) and the diamines (V).

ChemInform Abstract

Ethylene glycol (II) is treated with the secondary amines (I) in the presence of ruthenium or iridium complexes to form the amino alcohols (IV) and the diamines (V). The dependence of selectivity on the catalyst used is studied. Similar reactions with 1,2-propanediol instead of (II) have much lower selectivity.
