ChemInform Abstract

The oxidation of the naphthalenes (I) with Mn(acac)3 gives the diacetylmethyl derivatives (II). Using excess amounts of the oxidant, the 3-acet - oxypentanediones (III) are obtained [cf. yields of (IIc)/(IIIc) and (IId)/(IIId)]. The similar oxidation of the tri- and tetracyclic aromatic Compounds (IVa), (IVd), (VIa), (VId) and (VIII) also produces diacetylmethyl derivatives together with diacetylmethylene derivatives and further oxidation products.
