ChemInform Abstract: The Nature of the Active Species in the Chlorinating System Sulphur(I) Chloride

ChemInform Abstract

Aluminium Chloride- Sulphuryl Chloride. - Chlorination experiments in the systems S₂Cl₂(S₈, SCl₂) - AlCl₃ - SO₂Cl₂ with bromobenzene as target for chlorination show that the active chlorinating species in S₂Cl₂ - AlCl₃ - SO₂Cl₂ is SCl₃+ AlCl; rather than SO₂CI+AICLI . These observations enable the title system to be simplified to cömprise S8 - AlCl₃ - SO₂Cl₂, so obviating the need for the noxious S₂Cl₂.
