Abstract
The title cyclopeptides (VIII) related to Gramicidin S (IX) are synthesized as shown in the scheme in order to investigate the contributions of an increase in the basic amino acid residues and of configurations of phenylalanyl and prolyl residues toward antibacterial activity.

The title cyclopeptides (VIII) related to Gramicidin S (IX) are synthesized as shown in the scheme in order to investigate the contributions of an increase in the basic amino acid residues and of configurations of phenylalanyl and prolyl residues toward antibacterial activity. In the CD investigations, (VIIIa) gives a curve similar to that of (IX) while (VIIIb) and (VIIIc) give different curves. (VIIIb) exhibits substantial activities against Gram-negative bacteria whereas (VIIIa) and (VIIIc) possess negligible activity.
