Stable Molecules in Matrices†
Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Harry Evans Hallam, who died on 14th May 1977 at the age of 52. Harry Hallam's childhood was spent in Africa, but he was sent to school in Wales at the beginning of the last war. After service in the R.A.F. he returned to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, graduated in Chemistry and did an M.Sc degree under the supervision of Professor Mansel Davies. In 1950 he took a lecturing post at the University of Khartoum and during this period he was awarded the Ph. D. degree of the University of London. In 1955 he returned to the U. K. on appointment as a lecturer at the University College of Swansea. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1965, and became a Reader of the University of Wales in 1970. His outgoing and pleasant personality led to the formation of a large international circle of friends, who suffered a great loss at his untimely death. Others will be aware of his work through his book on Vibrational Spectroscopy of Trapped Species. In addition to teaching and research, he played a large part in the University and student affairs, being elected Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at Swansea in July 1976.
