Synthesis of Potential Cholinesterase Reactivators and Protectors

Several 4-pinacolyl-substituted mono- and bis-pyridinium salts were synthesised and their in vitro effect on acetylcholine esterase (AChE) and partially DFP-inhibited acetylcholine esterase (DP-AChE) was investigated. The affinity of these compounds to AChE (auto-inhibition) proved to be so large that the resulting reversible enzyme inhibition was greater than the reactivation of DP-AChE.
