Graphical Abstract

A TEM photograph of SiO2-CB/ES-SSBR, where the light part is carbon black (CB) and the dark part is silica (SiO2), is presented by Yu Bai and colleagues on page 2516. SiO2-CB/ES-SSBR composites show that aggregates of three to five SiO2 particles of about 20 nm in diameter are inlaid into the CB networks, exhibiting outstanding doping dispersion and homogeneous distribution. Silica aggregates in the comparable S-SSBR matrix are much bigger, and the dispersion of the two kinds of filler is worse than that in ES-SSBR. Additionally, the Si element is only detected in the CB aggregates by EDS spectra for the ES-SSBR matrix. Therefore, ES-SSBR is a remarkable type of energy-saving elastomer that can be used in tire tread.
