Reduction of 9,10-dihydroanthracene to (4) has meanwhile also been studied by Prof. R. G. Harvey, University of Chicago (personal communication).

Reaction of (4) with methylene diiodide (molar ratio 1: 3) and a zinc-copper couple in a Simmons-Smith reaction gives a complex mixture of cyclopropanation products, from which the monodduct, 1,4,5,8,9,10-hexahydro-4a,9a-methanoanthracene (25%) mp. 55–56 °C, can be isolated.
