Die Prostaglandine sind lipidlösliche C20-Carbonsäuren mit einem fünfgliedrigen Ring, mehreren Sauerstoff-Funktionen und mindestens einer Doppelbindung. Sie kommen im tierischen Organismus vor, wo sie u. a. die glatte Muskulatur anregen. In den letzten 10 Jahren hat man mehr über das Vorkommen, die Biosynthese, den Metabolismus und die pharmakologischen Eigenschaften von Prostaglandinen gelernt. Analytische Verfahren zu ihrer Bestimmung und Synthesen für die Naturprodukte und deren künstliche Analogen wurden entwickelt. In diesem Fortschrittsbericht wird versucht darzulegen, warum diese Ergebnisse die pharmazeutische Forschung außerordentlich stimulieren.
