By the year 2050, according to the DESERTEC concept, sustainable energy from the sunny regions of Southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East could yield so much power that all these countries could cover their own needs and also supply 15 to 20 % of the power consumed in Northern Europe. This project is based on studies by the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
