Abstract

Bankruptcy is a legal process that permits the voluntary discharge of debt by both individuals and businesses. Bankruptcy laws fluctuate across time and place, determined by need and ideology. Although most non-business bankruptcies occur after individuals experience adverse events and many recent laws emphasize the importance of a “fresh start,” bankruptcy still remains on a person's credit report for many years, which can limit opportunities later on.
