Abstract

Spectacles embody and naturalize the basic values of a society. Often narrated through emblematic individuals, spectacles are highly mediated events, sporting contests, political moments, and stories “of interest” that can normalize contemporary fears, anxieties, terrors, and concerns. Yet, spectacles are rife with contestation and contradictions, and important questions over depoliticization, passivity, and alienation become exacerbated when held together with new media technologies, platforms, and practices, especially when considering how spectacles are bound with social media, (new) social movements, activism, and prosumption.
