Prevention and intervention for psychologically stressful events

Summary

Evaluation and treatment for EMS clinicians who experience potentially traumatic events has been the subject of debate for many years. While it is recognized that some intervention may be appropriate and beneficial for some clinicians in at least some situations, there has not been a recognized consensus regarding best practices. This chapter reviews the historical literature and practices, evaluates current evidence-based guidelines, and offers a sample protocol to assist medical directors and EMS systems in the implementation of a program for clinicians who experience potentially traumatic events.
