Medical surveillance of emergency response personnel

First published: 18 August 2021

Summary

Medical surveillance or medical monitoring programs exist under the umbrella of response agency occupational health initiatives. These include systematic collection, analysis, and evaluation of health data to identify patterns suggesting adverse health effects requiring further investigation or remediation. Job duties, regulatory mandates, and potential exposures dictate necessary surveillance, conducted under the auspices of a qualified occupational medical director or contractor. Monitoring includes specific medical screening conducted after the employment offer, baseline with specific hazardous assignments, periodically thereafter, and upon exit or termination. Exposure-specific as well as on-scene medical monitoring for intense work environments and those mandating use of personal protective equipment also protect workers. The primary purpose of medical surveillance is to preserve the physical and mental health of each member throughout his or her service to the community.
