Pediatric trauma priorities

Summary

Injury is the leading cause of death and disability in children. Injury and trauma are the most frequent reason EMS clinicians will be called to pediatric encounters. Children have unique injury patterns, and multisystem trauma and critical illness may initially present more subtly than in adults. Therefore, establishing and executing priorities for pediatric trauma management requires an understanding of the unique anatomical and physiological characteristics of the developing child. Using that knowledge, the EMS clinician can then recognize specific signs, symptoms, and clinical implications of pediatric injuries in order to successfully resuscitate and stabilize a pediatric trauma patient.
