Normal childbirth

Summary

Pregnancy is commonly encountered in the prehospital setting, with management requiring little more than a focused history and physical examination, along with safe and timely transport to an appropriate hospital. A thorough understanding of normal pregnancy and childbirth is necessary for the EMS clinician and builds the foundation to understand complications of and emergencies related to pregnancy and childbirth. This chapter details normal pregnancy and delivery, especially as it presents in the prehospital setting. It also describes special considerations in pregnancy such as trauma and cardiac arrest.
