This chapter covers lesions of the oral mucosa, tongue and gingival mucosa which are either localized to the oral cavity or a manifestation of systemic diseases or infections. It describes some common conditions such as recurrent apthous stomatitis and how this may be differentiated from systemic conditions, and deficiencies that may exacerbate or cause oral ulceration. The chapter also describes some normal variants that may cause concern to parents of young children such as hairy tongue, erythema migrans and Fordyce spots, which may not be as familiar to medical practitioners.
