Abstract

Are.ni.cel'la. L. fem. n. arena, sand; L. fem. n. cella, a chamber, and in biology a cell; N.L. fem. n. Arenicella, a cell from sand.

Proteobacteria / Gammaproteobacteria / Arenicellales / Arenicellaceae / Arenicella

Gram-negative, aerobic, oxidase-positive, catalase-positive, deep yellow-pigmented nonmotile rod-shaped bacteria. Cells are 0.5–0.6-µm wide and 2.0–4.0-µm long. Chemoorganoheterotrophic. Sodium ions are essential for growth. Slightly halophilic, alkaliphilic, and mesophilic. The dominant isoprenoid quinone is Q-8. The polar lipids include phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an aminophospholipid, and an unidentified phospholipid. The major fatty acids are C16:1 ω7c, iso-C16:0, iso-C18:0, and C18:1 ω7c. The known habitat is marine environment. Arenicella is a genus in the family Arenicellaceae, order Arenicellales, class Gammaproteobacteria, phylum Proteobacteria.

DNA G + C content (mol%): 46.3–48.1 (T m).

Type species: Arenicella xantha Romanenko, Tanaka, Frolova and Mikhailov 2010, 1835VP.
