Gram-stain-negative rods or slightly curved rods. Spores are not formed. Obligate anaerobe. Chemoorganotroph. End products of fermentation include acetic acid, ethanol, H2, and CO2. Member of the family Ruminococcaceae on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons.
DNA G+C content (mol%): 38–44 (T m/HPLC).
Type species: Acetivibrio cellulolyticus Patel, Khan, Agnew and Colvin 1980, 184VP.
