Abstract

Brian Moser was a key figure in the development of a distinctively British ethnographic film format through his role as the founding series producer of the long-running and much copied Granada Television strand, Disappearing World (1970–93). The format of this strand broke with previous presenter-led television formats, aiming instead to provide greater access to the voice of the film subjects. It was also innovative in that every film was typically based directly on the fieldwork of an academic anthropologist who participated at every stage of the production. Moser also contributed to the refinement of the format through his own work as a director, making a number of films that represent prime examples of this way of doing ethnographic filmmaking.
