Abstract

Social institutions based on age have been observed in every continent and throughout recorded history. At the rudimentary end of a scale of complexity are those solely concerned with the graduated education of children or the organization of youths. This entry is concerned with a more elaborate level that persists beyond youth to more complex arrangements for adults of all ages, with implications for generational divisions and concepts of seniority within the family.
