Abstract

This entry presents a historical and cross-cultural survey of same-sex sexual desires, acts, and relationships between both men and women. It considers the variety of ways that cultures organize same-sex sexuality, including on the basis of age, gender, and class/racial/ethnic difference, and the impact of the development of the concept of homosexuality as a defining characteristic and identity.
