Introduction to Pharmacological Techniques
A Historical Perspective
Summary
This chapter provides a brief chronologic history of pediatric dental sedation, beginning with the 1970s. In 1998, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) used the terms minimal, moderate, and deep to categorize sedations. These are different degrees of central nervous system depression, each corresponding to a level of sedation relaxation. Decisions concerning the type of drug and the suitable route of drug administration may be made, in part, on the basis of the level of a child's cooperative behavior. Success in patient management requires both pharmacological and nonpharmacological techniques; the individual dentist's training and experience makes the difference in choice and efficacy of techniques employed. The chapter reveals how the area of pediatric dental sedation has changed. The shifts in sedation practices within pediatric dentistry reflect the many changes occurring within modern society.
