Summary

The biological profile is a vital component of human osteology and the teeth contribute significantly to it. Complete and fragmented dentitions house information on age, sex, and ancestry, which are indicated by formation and eruption stages, metric dimorphism, and population-specific metric and nonmetric trait expressions. In terms of positive identification, it is the idiosyncrasies of teeth that make them so valuable. These idiosyncratic features include cultural treatments, like dental fillings, as well as anatomical variations in tooth quantity and quality, tooth use and macrowear, and internal anatomy. Overall, teeth are valuable contributors to the biological profile and should be included whenever present.
