Abstract

Art and symbolic production are important aspects of human behavior and may distinguish our species from other hominin species. The capacity for symbolic behavior has implications for aspects of human cognition such as abstract thinking and memory. Visual arts are the most represented archaeologically, including painting, drawing, engraving, and sculpting. Chronology, recording, and interpretation are the central, but difficult, approaches to the study of art and symbol in the human past.
