Nanotechnology is the engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale, that is, a few nanometers. It is the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers. In recent years, nanotechnological techniques have enabled the manipulation and control of the microcellular environment, which has helped in the construction of complex tissues required for tissue engineering. By recapitulation of such in vivo environments in culture, this technology seems to accommodate a great potential in providing new vistas to cardiovascular tissue engineering. The present review summarizes various bioengineering techniques employed for repair of the heart cells and finally provides an overview of the current use of nanotechnology in cardiovascular tissue engineering.
