Summary

  • Over 11 million youth have a chronic health condition (CHC) that can impact their daily functioning and school performance, particularly if it is undetected or untreated.

  • Research presented in this chapter shows that environmental allergies are the most common CHC for youth, but studies indicate that CHCs such as asthma, obesity, and ADD/ADHD are increasing as CHCs for youth.

  • Educational modifications or accommodations are regularly indicated for students with CHCs, and specialized instructional support personnel (SISP) can be crucial to making sure that parents, teachers, and students are able to implement the best educational plan to serve students with CHCs.
