Abstract

On 2 April 1914, because they were excluded from male-dominated organizations, a group of progressive women, including suffragettes, socialists, labor union activists, and feminists, met at Wynn's Hotel in Dublin and established Cumann na mBan/The Irish Women's Council. Their objects were: “to advance the cause of Irish Liberty; to organize Irishwomen in furtherance of this object; to assist in arming and equipping a body of Irishmen for the defence of Ireland; and form a fund for these purposes to be called ‘The defence of Ireland fund.’” Cumann na mBan is an exclusively female organization that endorses the use of armed struggle to achieve political change – from the perspective of the authorities, they are a women's terrorist organization.
