Abstract

Visual analysis is the development of concepts and methods to study visual elements of the mobilization, framing, diffusion, and resonance of protest and social movements. In the early 1990s, the “visual turn” in the humanities and cultural studies inspired a theoretical debate about the “power of images” in political conflict. This debate also resonated among social movement scholars who have studied visual aspects of the performance of social movements, their use of visual media such as posters and photos, and the representation of protests in linear mass media. Visual analyses typically rely on multidisciplinary approaches ranging from in-depth studies of individual images that use methods from art history to quantitative content analysis leaning on communication studies.
