Abstract

Individual assessment of adults is a complex, yet crucial aspect of social work practice. This chapter describes major assessment models, including psychosocial, problem solving, cognitive-behavior, task-centered, solution-focused, and strength-based, as well as evidence-based models with content on assessment instruments and scales on anxiety and depression. Specific assessment approaches such as cultural assessment using the culturagram, suicide assessment, DSMIV assessment, substance abuse assessment, and assessment of older people are presented. Because of limitations of existing assessment methods, the need for evidence-based models is raised. The implications for micro, mezzo, and macro social work practice conclude this chapter.
