Abstract

This article discusses the coastal processes in shelf seas. Tides and waves are the most evident and energetic of motions. However, seasonal or localized vertical differences in density, arising from temperature and salinity variations, may be most significant in determining ecology. Likewise background, large-scale circulations will determine the pathways and concentrations of persistent contaminants.
