Kinetic Study of the Oxidation of tert-Butanol by Cerium(IV) in Perchloric Acid Media
Abstract
The kinetics of the oxidation of tert-butanol by cerium(IV) in perchloric acid has been investigated spectrophotometrically. The water role has been elucidates by using acidity criteria. A tentative mechanism consistent with the kinetics is discussed where a complex cerium(IV)-alcohol is formed, the equilibrium constant for its formation being calculated. The ratedetermining step is a bimolecular process between ions of positive charge.
