Abstract

This entry describes the need for confidentiality in conducting clinical and epidemiologic research, particularly with respect to informational privacy of individuals. Ethical principles (including beneficence, nonmalfeasance, autonomy, and justice) are reviewed, and mention is made of the legal framework and guidelines to prevent the violation of confidentiality.
